About
I am a contributing editor for High Country News and freelance journalist based in Gunnison, Colorado. I often write about oil, gas and mining industries; public lands; and economics and labor in the Mountain West.
My freelance work has appeared in Harper’s, The Guardian, ProPublica, The Drift, The Nation, Vox, Politico Magazine, Civil Eats, Montana Free Press and Outside Magazine, among others. My story about the battery metals mining boom for The Drift was selected for the 2024 The Best American Science and Nature Writing anthology. That story was also a finalist for a 2024 Livingston Award and was named one of the best stories of the year by Longreads.
Before moving to Colorado for a position with HCN, I worked for E&E News in Washington, D.C., where I reported on environmental and climate politics. I got my journalism start as a general assignment reporter at the Bucks County Courier Times in the suburbs of Philadelphia. A Dow Jones News Fund fellowship placed me at there as an intern, after I graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
